Partner Update February 2015- Promotions

Despite the chilly weather in Chicago, the Travel & Adventure Show was very well attended by local consumers looking for warm destinations. The show was very busy for the Tahiti Tourisme with a surge after our destination presentation given by Tekura Kelley in the destination theatre on the tradeshow floor. We were joined by CPTM Aranui and Certified Tahiti Specialist®, Chole Cipollone of Tahiti Travel Planers. Final attendance numbers for this are not yet available

The New York Times Travel Show was held just before one of the biggest snowstorms in history was about to blow through the city, so attendees had warm weather on their mind! Attendees steadily flocked to the Tahiti Tourisme booth for travel information to our sunny spot in the South Pacific. We were joined by Air Tahiti Nui, CPTM Aranui, Pacific Holidays, and two Certified Tahiti Specialist® – Sharon Gordon of Let’s Go Travel and Lisa Mazzillo of Power Travel. Additionally, since it was a consumer show many Tour Operator Partners provided flyers with package to the Islands of Tahiti from the greater NY area. Final attendance numbers for this are not yet available.

2014 Tahiti Business Forum

This year’s Tahiti Business Forum was held at the Manhattan Beach Marriott in Manhattan Beach, CA on June 18 & 19, 2014.

The Business Forum, last held in 2008, is designed by Tahiti Tourisme North America to gather key Tahiti partners across North America and Tahiti, to promote synergy, and work together for the benefit of our destination.

This event was an opportunity for GIE Tahiti Tourisme and TTNA to launch the new global brand and for our partners to share their concerns about the challenges affecting our destination. An additional objective of the event was to foster an atmosphere of collaboration in order to facilitate a constructive review and evaluation of TTNA programs.

The conference began on Wednesday, June 18th, with an  “Online Reputation Management” session sponsored and presented by TripAdvisor with our guest speaker, Andrew Wiens, International DMO Manager for TripAdvisor. This was a private session for our hotel partners.

Andrew provided attendees with insight as to how to manage their online reputation. “If you have a higher rating on TripAdvisor, then you’ll get more sales,” said Andrew. “If a property can increase its review score by one point, it’s an 11.2% increase in sales.”

“Guests are visiting TripAdvisor more frequently prior to booking. It has become part of their culture,” said Wiens.

In Q1 2013, TripAdvisor had 108 million unique monthly visitors on mobile, which was up 100% year over year. Travelers are using tablets to book more and more; however, they are not seeing significant international booking from using smartphones.

Following TripAdvisor was the “Industry Challenges & Creative Solutions” session, presented by TTNA.

A week prior to the Tahiti Business Forum, TTNA had sent out a survey questionnaire about strengths and challenges to be completed by all of our partners attending the forum.

The feedback and raw data from the survey was then analyzed and presented during the   session. All attendees then teamed up to brainstorm these challenges by using strengths through the creation and implementation of an effective marketing plan.

During the session, every team presented their marketing campaigns thus engaging all partners to discuss and share openly with the TTNA team their concerns and suggestions to improve the promotions for the destination. Tahiti Tourisme North America would like to thank all partners for their input and cooperation. TTNA will implement and adapt accordingly new marketing and promotional initiatives and directions to meet the objectives discussed during these sessions.

The following day opened with a sponsored breakfast by Luxury Link, followed by the unveiling of the new global brand launch, which was presented by Thomas Rebergue, CMO at GIE Tahiti Tourisme, and Sally McNeill, Managing Director at FutureBrand Australia.

Sally presented the three main objectives for the new global brand. First, to create a strong, unified and consistent identity and noted, “the North American market has done a great job building the brand, but that hasn’t been done globally and we needed to create consistency,” said McNeill.

The second two objectives are to renew French Polynesia and to identify a global brand positioning for all audiences to be adapted to each market. McNeill remarked, “This cannot just be a short-term solution, it has to be something that evolves and builds and creates a story – for yourselves as well as making sure we are thinking ahead for those that are going to visit the Islands of Tahiti.”

ISLANDS Magazine sponsored the coffee break that followed the unveiling of the new global brand launch.

The “Insights into the Luxury Traveler” session presented by John C. Anderson, Digital Sales & Marketing Director at Robb Report, offered an overview of the North American luxury traveler, what they are looking for, and what they expect. “They look for the best of the best and they look to combine business and personal travel at the same time,” he said. “The biggest change that we’ve heard is that it’s all about experience. People are looking for something that is a broad based experience.”

Anderson also mentioned that the market is now looking at the 35+ audience and that the younger affluent traveler is spending more than the 45+.

Skye Marying, Managing Editor for TravelAge West and award-winning writer, blogger, and social media strategist gave a presentation on “Outbound Travel Trends and The Millennial Traveler.”

Mayring covered the latest travel trends including technology and personalization. “Technology is facilitating the personalization. In the 2020’s, we will all have an e-agent – a digital travel buddy or an A.I. device that is learned to understand the individual needs of each person. It will personalize all of our travel experiences. Travel brands will be able to rent out a personalized e-agent as a part of the vacation packages,” shared Mayring.

“By 2015, millennials are expected to have billions of dollars in spending power.”

BRIDES Magazine hosted the lunch and during the luncheon, Hutch Looney, Pacific Director at BRIDES Magazine, presented the award for “Best Honeymoon Destination” to Jonathan Reap, Managing Director at TTNA. This is the first time that the Islands of Tahiti win this award, beating out Italy, Hawaii, and the Maldives.

The Forum resumed with an in-depth travel agent panel discussion, featuring five “Certified Tahiti Specialists” from all over North America, including:

  • Katie Cadar – TravelStore Platinum, Los Angeles, CA.
  • Kleon Howe – The Art of Travel, San Diego, CA.
  • Gretchen Macknight – Perfect Honeymoons/Holiday Travel, Escondido, CA.
  • Annie Smits – The Travel Group, Vancouver, BC, Canada
  • Christina Turrini – Frosch Travel, San Francisco, CA.

The specialists were invited to share with the audience their perspective from the retail side of the business.

The panel addressed many common themes such as the food costs, free Wi-Fi, the evolution of niche markets, family programs on the islands, the challenge of inclusive resort pricing, the surf and dive markets, etc.

The first question asked the panel to address how the beauty of the Islands of Tahiti compares with other exotic destinations. And the unanimous feedback from the agents was, “it does not compare. Tahiti is what the other exotic destinations are trying to be.”

The audience was very engaged during the panel and extremely interested in understanding their side of the business. The suppliers were also very concerned as to how they could help the agents sell the destination and overcome the challenges facing our destination.

This session was very educational and indicative of many of the challenges we need to overcome within the industry. It offered all of the attendees insight into the difficulties our Certified Tahiti Specialists are facing.

The Forum closed with a public relations panel discussion, featuring five media partners from different aspects of media – print, photography, and television.

During the session, some of the panelists were asked to share what the latest trends are with their publication, and what is the best way to get into their magazines. “Culinary travel is a huge trend,” said Jacqui Gifford, Travel + Leisure. “86% want to eat local food. Culinary festivals are also big.”

Nicole Wood with The Bachelor/The Bachelorette was asked how can the resorts and the airlines best work together, “The biggest ask is the room nights and we know it is a big leap. But really recognize the benefit of the exposure from the show for the airlines and the destination.” She also mentioned that viewers do book their trips after watching what they’ve just seen on the show.

The panel provided a better understanding of public relations and how it benefits their products and the destination.

2014 Recent Trade Shows & Events

January 11 & 12, 2014
Travel & Adventure Show, Chicago, IL

The Travel & Adventure Show is Chicago’s largest travel show for consumers looking for travel inspuration®. Tahiti Tourisme shared a 30-minute destination presentation on the show floor that was well attended and very well received. This is the third year that TTNA has participated in this show’s Chicago location. Despite the weather, the show provided wide exposure with more than 20,000 consumers attending the two-day event.  We are hoping to return again in 2015 and are will hold two destination presentations next year.

February 8 & 9, 2014
Travel & Adventure Show, Los Angeles, CA

The Travel & Adventure Show continued to prove their formula for a successful consumer travel show by again providing great exposure for the Islands of Tahiti to more than 32,000 consumers from the greater Los Angeles and Orange County area. Tahiti Tourisme North America held a well attended destination presentation and was featured in several travel interviews.

February 19 – 21, 2014
GMITE Los Angeles

Tahiti Tourisme North America was one of fifty Suppliers with a full day of one-on-one appointments with pre-qualified incentive buyers and meeting planners. TTNA covered a general destination overview and travel information on the destination as the attending buyers have been receiving an influx of interest from their clients for the Islands of Tahiti.

February 28 – March 2, 2014
New York Times Travel Show

Tahiti Tourisme North America and Partners participated in the New York Times Travel Show which had more than 15,000 consumers in attendance. TTNA had a prime booth location in the South Pacific section next to one of the popular cultural entertainment stages which attracted many consumers and provided an increased presence and branding exposure. Participating Partners included: Air Tahiti Nui, C.P.T.M. Aranui and Pleasant Holidays.

March 10, 2014
The Wedding Salon in Los Angeles, CA

Tahiti Tourisme North America was one of only a select few destinations represented at this very upscale bridal show. The attendees paid $75 per couple to attend this 4-hour tradeshow with vendors from all aspects of the wedding and honeymoon planning process. The Islands of Tahiti were on the top of many brides’ list as their top honeymoon destination with many saying they came to the show specifically to see us. Travel Store, along with two of our very active certified Tahiti Tiare Agents had a booth right next to us which created a convenient, “one stop shop” for many future honeymooners. Tahiti Tourisme North America will also be participating in the Chicago and New York Wedding Salon shows in the fall.

2014 Tahiti Reception Series

Tahiti Tourisme North America is pleased to announce the successful launch of our newly formatted travel agent training program and receptions. The first reception took place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Westside Tavern in Los Angeles. The new format brought together preferred retail travel advisors who were hand-selected by our participating Tour Operator Partners. The receptions gave this exclusive group of select travel advisors the opportunity to network with the participating Suppliers and receive a revamped destination overview that focused on the five archipelagoes, including activities and products offered throughout the islands.

Detailed information covering target markets beyond honeymoons including diving, family travel, sailing and yachting and Tahiti’s “Hidden Paradise” islands rounded out the overall presentation. The participating Supplier Partners also gave presentations on their respective properties.

The Tahiti receptions continued in California to Walnut Creek on Wednesday, February 12 and Sacramento on Thursday, February 13. In total, with our partners, we successfully trained more than 150 preferred travel advisors about the Islands of Tahiti. Earlier this month the Tahiti Reception Series were held in Long Island, NY on Tuesday, March 4, Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, March 5 and to Boston, MA on Thursday, March 6. Despite the treacherous weather, TTNA and our Partners successfully met with and trained over 150 additional preferred travel advisors on the East Coast. We will continue to hold the Tahiti Receptions throughout the year, exclusively for Partner invited travel agents in the following cities:

2013 Tahiti Travel Exchange

The Tahiti Travel Exchange (TTE) will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013 at the Radisson Plaza Resort Tahiti.

Tahiti Tourisme North America (TTNA) is very excited to be bringing the TTE to the island of Tahiti for the 9th year! The TTE is a program developed by TTNA for Retail Travel Agents to build a strong foundation of knowledge on the Islands of Tahiti and our Suppliers’ products through education and experience and to strengthen their relationships with their preferred Tour Operator Partners. The program is comprised of a rigorous, one-day destination training and small group training presentations given by our Suppliers.

Air Tahiti Nui has generously offered a favorable rate to our participating Tour Operator Partners with the agreement that their attendance to the TTE is mandatory in their itineraries. The participating Tour Operator Partners handle all aspects of their fam trip including Travel Agent selection, islands visited, products experienced, and participation fee charged to the Travel Agents.

Since the primary goal of the TTE is to educate Travel Agents, we require that they register for the Tahiti Tiare Program prior to their departure. Participation in the TTE “fast tracks” the completion of the program’s requirements by completing two of the three requirements in becoming a Certified Tahiti Specialist. Also, since we are strengthening the relationships with our Tour Operator Partners, all training presentations and collateral must utilize a Tour Operator as the call to action.

Currently, we have 12 participating Tour Operator Partners, featuring Boomerang Tours, Classic Vacations, GOGO Worldwide Vacations Canada, Islands Escapes by Goway Travel, Islands in the Sun, Pacific Holidays, PacificIslands.com, Pleasant Holidays, Tahiti Legends, Tahiti Nui Travel, Travel2, and Voyage Cassis. Their arrivals to Tahiti will begin on Wednesday, December 4. We expect approximately 130 Travel Agents and Tour Operator escorts from the U.S. and Canada.

As a local Supplier, you are invited to participate in the TTE where you will have the opportunity to present and train all attending Travel Agents and Tour Operator escorts in a small group format. In addition, you will have a company profile in the TTE training manual, the opportunity to provide your collateral materials, and access to the database of all attendees. We will also provide a list of the Tour Operator contacts so favorable rates and invitations can be offered to possibly include your product(s) in their pre and post-TTE fam trip itineraries.

Collateral only participation is available. Participation is limited and on a first come, first serve basis. Participation fees apply.

2013 Tahiti Workshops in Canada

Air Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Tourisme North America will partner again to co-host the Tahiti Workshops in Canada. Workshops will take place August 26 in Montreal, August 27 in Toronto, August 28 in Calgary and August 29 in Vancouver. We are expecting approximately 340 travel agents to attend.

In addition to co-hosting the workshops with Air Tahiti Nui, the participating Tahiti cruise line partners include CPTM Aranui and Paul Gauguin Cruises.  Hotel and resort partners include Hilton French Polynesia, Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa, InterContinental French Polynesia, Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa, Maitai Hotels, Sofitel French Polynesia and South Pacific Management Hotels, Resorts and Spa. Tour operator partners include Air Canada Vacations, Boomerang Tours, Classic Vacations, Islands Escapes by Goway, Planet Tahiti, Travel2 & Islands in the Sun and Voyages Cassis. 

2013 U.S. Workshops Come to Successful Close

Tahiti Tourisme North America concluded its 2013 travel agent workshop series with over 850 attending travel agents. The workshops were conducted in 12 cities across the U.S. with 21 supplier and tour operator partners.

The workshop series traveled to the Air Tahiti Nui/American Airlines codeshare cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Scottsdale/Phoenix, Miami, Atlanta and Dallas. Workshops were also held in Newport Beach and Portland.

The Tahiti destination presentation given during the workshops emphasized culture, history, and the “Hidden Paradise” islands such as Huahine, Rangiroa, the Tuamotu atolls, the Marquesas, the Austral islands and the Gambier islands. There was also a focus on the primary niche markets including dive, yacht charters and spa.

Many travel agents expressed a renewed interest in becoming a “Certified Tahiti Specialist” and look forward to the re-launch of the updated Tahiti Tiare Program. To continue communications with the travel agents, Tahiti Tourisme North America’s Tiare News newsletter will highlight different islands, activities, and cultural aspects that the agents may share with their clients.
